I don’t find myself too interesting, but perhaps you do. Hopefully you already know know a little about me based on this website, but if you don’t I’ll try to say it plainly. I love to program. I like creating websites, general software, and games. I am currently studying for a Bachelor’s Degree of Science and am a Computer Science major. To be honest, although I love to make games (it’s a wonderful thing creating something you have floating around in your head), I decided very early that I did not want to make games for a living. I’ve read a lot of articles from people who work in the industry, and simply decided it was not something I’d want to do. Instead, I suspect my future career will be general computer programming.
I make software, so what? Truth is, I get nearly all of my ideas for software from problems people have encountered in the past. As such, if you have a simplistic idea for software, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll see how feasible it is. I hope you understand any freeware I release does not suck up a large portion of my time, so if you wish for anything to be made by me you should make sure your idea is simple enough.
Tools I am in love with and use for most of my development:
Blender, Gimp, Game Maker, Unity3d, Lazarus (IDE for FreePascal) + Andorra2d + SDL
Sadly, I cannot develop any software for the Mac platform. I simply don’t have the funds to purchase a Mac. “Why don’t you use a cross compiler?” Simply put, to even cross compile to a Mac from Linux there are some files you need to rip off of a Mac. Aside from that, I would have no way to test the software after cross compiling due to me not having a Mac.
The good news is Unity3d supports Mac, and if I get around to purchasing Game Maker for Mac, I can port any projects to the Mac platform as well. If you didn’t notice, this doesn’t cover all bases. Releasing projects for the Mac without being able to test them is something I am extremely wary of, and obviously without having a Mac I will never be able to compile applications for it. This rules out any games I create not made in Unity3d/Game Maker and any software. Unless I get a donor Mac, I probably won’t buy one for another 4-5 years unless I somehow manage to get rich (I’m a poor college student).
I have an odd way of obtaining enjoyment: by making others happy. This is the entire reason I bother to create games and software, because I love it when someone enjoys something I make. It’s what makes a hobby worthwhile. If I didn’t have any fun making or seeing the results of what I make, I wouldn’t be doing it. As such, if anything I make is really useful to you, at least drop me some feedback. I’d love to make things easier to use and just to hear your opinion. I’ve also got a handy donate button for those of you who are financially blessed and wish to express your thankfulness in that manner.

/ June 4, 2011Hey Matt! What happened to KoL?
)
(and more importantly, when is it coming back?

/ June 4, 2011It’s been in hiatus for quite some time…
Short version: Lack of interest from others killed my desire to work on it, and Java was a poor choice for both client and server. I could probably get away with making the client in Java again, but I would use something like lwjgl to make use of OpenGL instead of having everything software rendered.
Having a web game that’s text and image based only (via PHP) is the only thing that’s really on my mind at the moment. It is less demanding to create and easier to publish updates to. In fact, I’ve already been rewriting this engine. What I really lack is artistic ability, and it’s keeping me from releasing this PHP game to the public, and I’m too poor to afford an artist, so it’s just sitting idly waiting for me to make up some pretty graphics.
This same graphical conundrum applies even more heavily to any real-time morpg I create in the future as well — because those require at minimum 3 directions animated in 3-5 frames each, although I am much better at drawing tiles than I am at drawing buildings free-hand.
At any rate, I’ll probably just end up releasing the PHP game with my crappy art and hoping I can afford to hire an artist later. I’ve already got some redundancy and backup systems in place as well, so it’s not a great leap to get to the prime time.
In the meantime, as kingoflands.com suggests, I’ve been working mainly on Android and Flash lately in attempts to raise money to help pay for school books, because it’s a more immediate way to make money than kingoflands would be.

/ June 12, 2011For KoL, if you have a well-designed and well-balanced game with a great concept behind it, you shouldn’t care too much about the graphics at the beginning; even stick-figures with approximately correct proportions and houses that look like houses would do the job (at least, that’s what I think). Those are the cherries on a cake; we typically need the cake more than the cherries (exceptions aside).
Anyways, good luck on all your projects, and good luck multi-tasking programming with real life!
